Monday story
Mosaic
Today I thought I’d share my tiny story “Mosaic,” published last week in South 85 Journal. South 85 is a wonderful literary magazine published by Converse University’s low-residency MFA program. I’m thrilled my little story is in such great company; please check out the issue!
I wrote “Mosaic” to experiment with a touch of magical realism and/or metaphor; readers have interpreted it both ways, which I like. It deals with grief and loss, and ultimately, with the ways we’re reshaped by experience. This story will also be part of my collection A Small Priceless Thing and Other Stories, forthcoming March 2027 from Highlander Press.
You can check out the published story here at South 85. Also, if you’d like an audio version, please have a listen below!
If you’d like to share any thoughts about the story, I’d love to read them. Thanks so much for checking it out!
About A Place to Stand:
I started this column in hopes of creating a bit of space and sharing light in challenging times. Drawing on my own experience as a trauma survivor, I offer meditative exercises using creative writing and music, my two professional/artistic pursuits. I also share some of my own writing and thoughts on the creative process. You can find out more about me and my work at my website.
If you enjoy what you’ve read here, please consider subscribing and/or sharing this post. Thank you!

This is what grief feels like - a shattering, a breaking apart, a lack of recognition of the self.
